Undergraduate degrees
Foundation degrees
Foundation degrees were introduced in September 2001 as an alternative to HND and conventional undergraduate degree courses. A foundation degree is a new form of degree that entails much more hands-on work experience than traditional degrees and develops practical skills for a fast-track to a career.
The qualification offers a practical solution to the 'work or study?' dilemma faced by many prospective students. By combining work and study, foundation degrees allow graduates to gain the skills employers are looking for.
The University uses the same rigorous procedures that apply to other degrees in awarding foundation degrees, which fulfill the entry requirements should you subsequently wish to progress to an honours degree.
Thanks to extensive experience developing courses that boost employment prospects and a proven track record of innovation in vocational, skills-based education, the University of Glamorgan has led the way in developing the foundation degree model and was the first university in Wales to offer the qualification.
Because your work counts towards your degree, you can even earn while you learn.
Single honours degree
If you know the subject that interests you, a single honours degree allows you to concentrate your study on that area. There is, however, still significant flexibility - you'll study a selection of course modules with other students on your course, but you'll also be able to choose optional modules so that you can increase your level of specialisation in your chosen field.
Joint honours degree
You can divide your study equally between two or three subjects of your own choosing. Doing so allows you to keep your career options open by studying subjects relevant to your broader goals and ambitions and eventually obtaining an award that indicates your qualifications in more than one field, eg BSc (Hons) Politics and Sociology. Because you study more than one subject, you have less flexibility in choosing modules. You take the compulsory modules for each subject you choose and have fewer opportunities to choose specialised modules.
Many of the subjects available for single honours degrees are available in combination for joint degrees. Other subjects are offered only as part of a joint honours or major/minor package. You can even marry subjects from across academic disciplines in a joint honours programme.
Major/minor honours degree
Major/minor honours degrees are for those who want to study two subject areas with a greater emphasis on one - the major - than on the other - the minor.
The title of your degree will reflect the respective emphases of your studies, eg BA (Hons) Law with Sociology.
Combined honours scheme
Our 'design-your-own-degree' programme is one of the most flexible anywhere in the UK.
This route gives you the opportunity to build your own BA or BSc programme from up to six subject areas. In the final year, you slim down to two or three or specialise in one of them.
Staff will help you select subjects and modules to create a scheme tailored to your needs and interests. You may also choose this option if you want to delay your choice between single or joint degree until the end of the first year.
